More and more avionics systems available to general aviation are software based.Occasionally a manufacturer will release an update to the existing software versions. Some of these updates are “Mandatory” and others are “Optional.” Like your computer, software updates improve existing features, add new features and increase safety andreliability.
“Mandatory” updates are often released to fix a known problem with existing units or tobetter comply with FAA regulations. These updates are usually covered under warrantyby the manufacturer and are generally performed by an authorized dealer/servicecenter. Manufacturers release service bulletins to these dealers/service centersdescribing the upgrade procedure and added or corrected features. An owner/operatorcan find mandatory service bulletin information at a manufacturerʼs website or by mail ifyour equipment was registered with a current address.
“Optional” updates often add new features. For example, Aspen Avionics recentlyreleased an update for their EFD 1000 that includes airport charts and improvedpanning capabilities. Garmin also recently released an update that improves XMsatellite functionality and fixes a communication issue with Ryan TCAD units. It is bestto contact an authorized dealer/service center to find out about latest versions andfeatures. Internet forums can also be a great resource for this information.
(The Garmin 400W/500W series update mentioned above is to main s/w v3.3, and is warranty reimbursable til July 31, 2010. Contact your local Garmin dealer to set up an appointment to upgrade your unit before the deadline.)
